Description of the open call

An artists’ residence, a multidisciplinary arts centre and a heritage site dating back to the Renaissance, the Académie de France in Rome – Villa Medici welcomes more than 70 artists, writers and researchers each year for stays of varying lengths, including 16 artists in residence for a year.

Eligibility requirements

  • Applicants may submit only one application per competition.
  • Applicants must be over 18 years of age on the closing date for applications.
  • Applicants must speak French. A basic knowledge of the Italian language and culture is recommended. However, the competition does not impose any nationality requirements.
  • The selection process is aimed at individuals already established in their professional careers.
  • Applicants must submit a detailed proposal outlining their research topics, the nature of their work and their reasons for applying for the residency.
  • Applicants may submit a collaborative proposal. In this case, each selected individual will receive a residency grant.
  • Applicants must not have previously been residents.

The competition is open to established French-speaking artists, authors and researchers, with no nationality restrictions. Applications are accepted across all disciplines of literary and artistic creation, the arts and crafts, as well as in the fields of art history and theory, and the restoration of works of art or monuments.

Offered support

12 months at the Villa Medici in Rome, starting in September 2027, for a residency focused on creative work, experimentation or research.
