CN D in Pantin, Maison des Métallos, MC93 — maison de la culture de Seine-Saint-Denis, Bobigny
This training program aims to support choreographers in navigating the multitude of contexts, roles, and connections that shape their projects.
Lacking formal initial training and learning through hands-on experience, choreographers leading projects often acquire their skills empirically; this frequently gives rise to points of tension regarding purpose and methodology—for the artists themselves, their teams, and their partners. Amidst a period of political and economic uncertainty that exacerbates career instability and a loss of bearings, the Centre national de la danse (CN D) has designed this new program to help strengthen choreographers' skills.
Drawing on insights from various surveys and discussions conducted by the CN D (notably the 2024 survey on dance companies), this program fosters reflection on the evolving governance models of dance companies, the role and positioning of choreographers, and the nature of working relationships and partnerships. It does not aim to turn choreographers into administrators, but rather to address them as artists. The program’s goal is to enable choreographers to envision a comprehensive artistic project—and, by extension, to design organizational structures suited to those projects and their local contexts, manage the timing of their activities, and establish clear working relationships.
The training takes place across various venues in the Île-de-France region, allowing participants to gain practical experience with the specific realities of different projects and territories.

Program
Module #1 – Contexts
Following an introductory session covering the training program’s key issues, frameworks, objectives, and expectations, this module aims to clarify the professional context in which choreographers operate.
Participants will first examine the complex interplay of their various roles and functions—and the terminology associated with them—to establish a shared vocabulary and gain a clearer understanding of the artistic, administrative, legal, and managerial implications of their day-to-day work. Equipped with this perspective, they will then focus on two fundamental areas: analyzing their relationship with time and adopting tools to manage a workflow often fragmented by the multifaceted nature of their work; and articulating their artistic projects while situating them within the dance ecosystem.
Module #2 – Skills
Covering everything from the creative process to company development, this module identifies the skills needed to successfully carry out a choreographic project. It addresses the skills of the choreographer—focusing on key competencies, leadership approaches, and the dynamics of managerial legitimacy—as well as those of the surrounding teams, through clarifying expectations, gaining insight into specific roles, and better understanding various collaborative contexts and their implications.
These topics are explored through group and individual exercises—including practical workshops, case studies, and role-playing—enabling participants to shift their vantage points and broaden their perspectives.
Module #3 – Structures
This module brings to light the values underpinning each choreographer’s artistic project, serving as a necessary foundation for developing a comprehensive, strategic vision for their organization.
Articulating these values—and ensuring their alignment with both the artistic project and the company’s overall mission—will enable participants to examine and strengthen their company’s structure and governance, as well as gain a better grasp of financial management. It also provides an opportunity to address the project’s social dimension through the lens of organizational social responsibility, working conditions, and the prevention of psychosocial risks.
The module combines practical workshops with theoretical and methodological insights.
Module #4 – Relationships
Relational work lies at the heart of organizational processes, within a web of connections often strained by the exponential fragmentation of work schedules and locations.
Building on the values and vision clarified in the previous module, this final stage of the training addresses the dynamics of connecting with others—both inside and outside the organization. The module offers tools, methods, and practical scenarios to improve day-to-day team communication, prevent and navigate conflict, and better define, formalize, and build relationships with partners.
Teaching resources and methods
The program is based on an active, experiential learning approach. Theoretical concepts are consistently linked to practical exercises, simulations, and work on the participants' actual projects. Alternating between individual work, paired discussions, group workshops, and experience-sharing sessions fosters the gradual mastery of tools and their concrete application in professional practice. The training program requires personal study time, including between sessions.
