Whistling to oneself, “like the contours of a stable center amid chaos”; shaping movement from the breath escaping one’s lips. Inventing an expanding world – a realm of familiar tunes from which gestures emerge; whistling a note, crafting a melody, then another – like the ephemeral mapping of a state of mind. Following Infinite, a piece brimming with orality, where the utterance of numbers was transmitted from body to body, Boris Charmatz proceeds to a radical reduction of meaning and physical activity. In SOMNOLE, the exhaled air of a whistle joins the emergence of movement to form a fragile knot between dance and music. Like a body seeking rest, Boris Charmatz invents an insomniac dance, a refuge of refrains and rhythms on the border between waking dreams and dark reveries.

As a dancer and choreographer, Boris Charmatz puts dance to the test of formal constraints that redefine its range of possibilities. He uses the stage as a draft for embodying concepts, amplifying voices and intensifying body perception, as in 10000 gestes and Liberté Cathédrale. Through experimental projects such as Bocal and Musée de la danse, he has created concentrates of collective experience that redefine the relationship with the public, the urban space and the choreographic repertoire – a multi-faceted approach that he has continued to develop with Tanztheater Wuppertal.
