Nineteen research and notation projects received grants for dance research and heritage in May 2019. Researchers and notators present the progress of their work. Exploring aesthetics as diverse as the closed-chain gavotte of the Fisel region (in Cornwall), sacred Afro-Brazilian dances (candomblé), the dynamic and expressive qualities of Duncanian movement, and the fundamentals of flamenco, some delve deeper into the historical and geographical contexts of dance traditions, while others experiment with the potential of these artistic practices in other fields.

As a resource pole for outreach and artistic and cultural education in dance, the CN D offers zones of reflexion between professionals so as to favour friction between ideas, convictions, desires and questions. Thinking about practices, placing them in perspective, sharing ideas and questioning each person’s postures are the objectives given to these periods for exchanges between all the professionals involved in outreach and artistic and cultural educational actions.

This project proposes to create a musical score for a piece by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui that premiered in London with the National Youth Dance Company, was restaged at the Folkwang Universität der Künste, and is now performed by amateur dancers from the group led by Ghislaine Tétier, De l’Air dans l’art (Fresnes). Composed of material from "Babel (words)" (2010), "Noetic" (2014), and "Loin" (2005), Frame[d] showcases some of the fundamental characteristics of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s dance: the contrast between “sharp” and fluid movements, the highly elaborate arm work, the importance of listening, …

Focusing on the work of Léon Bleuniadur’s Ensemble des arts et traditions populaires, the project aims to create a score for an iconic six-minute piece for sixteen dancers—a dance from the “gavotte à chaîne fermée” tradition practiced in the Pays Fisel region of central Lower Brittany, choreographed in 2015 by Anthony Prigent. Led by Fabrice David, an ethnologist and specialist in traditional Breton dances, the project explores thought-provoking fundamental questions: What do we know about the distinctive features of these dances, and what measures are being taken to promote their transmission…

Seeking to address some of the challenges in understanding Alwin Nikolais’s choreographic system, the project examines three fundamental concepts of his philosophy of the body and dance movement: decentering, convergence, and Gestalt. This approach to dance, which sought to deconstruct the body by subverting its habitual movements and emphasizing abstraction, paved the way for a heightened awareness of the body—a soma-aesthetic philosophy that developed proprioceptive tech niques and an ecological and democratic conception of movement as participation.
