FAQ for professionals

Les Établissements Recevant du Public (ERP)

Can a dance school be classified as a Type X public access building?

No. Type X public access buildings apply only to sporting activities. This category includes enclosed and covered sports facilities, multi-purpose sports halls, ice rinks, riding schools, and indoor swimming pools – whether convertible or mixed-use.

How can I find out which ERP category my premises fall into?

The official website of the French government, service-public.fr, provides details of the categories and types of ERP.
The ERP classification, which relates to fire safety in buildings, is assigned when the opening declaration is submitted to the local council. This classification is therefore recorded in the building’s fire safety register.

Is a dance school considered a ‘dance hall’?

No. A dance school is a Type R public access building (educational establishment). ‘Dance halls’ are Type P public access buildings, which include ballrooms and dance halls.

What types of public buildings are there in the dance sector?

The dance sector comprises several types of public buildings: dance education establishments (Type R public buildings), performance venues (Type L public buildings) and vocational training organisations (Type R public buildings).

What is an ERP?

Establishments open to the public (ERPs) are public or private buildings which are open to members of the public other than the organisation’s employees.

What criteria are used to classify public access buildings?

Public access buildings are classified by category (from 1 to 5), based on the building’s capacity, and by type (letters), based on their activity or the nature of their operation.
