Quadrilles créoles, histoire(s), esthétique et pratiques

by Isabelle Calabre and Estelle Corbière

This study documents the quadrilles of the French West Indies and French Guiana (quadrille, haute-taille, boulangère) in terms of their choreographic characteristics, their history, their status in Creole societies, and their evolution—particularly in relation to the metropolitan contredanse. Based on a comparative analysis examining local transformations during the periods of slavery, colonial rule, and the contemporary era—specifically focusing on the French quadrilles that were popular in the 18th century—the project involves analytical work that draws on notational tools.
