Magasins Généraux
Inspired by a dialogue between choreographer Christian Rizzo and curator Anne-Laure Le Stage, Une assemblée des gestes (episode 1) approaches the exhibition as a space for creation, a field of collective experimentation where gesture is both a driving force and a method of composition. Presented at the Magasins Généraux as part of the CN D's off-site program, this first installment, which inaugurates a series of exhibitions on the theme of gestures, explores the connections between choreographic, artisanal, and domestic practices. Here, gestures are approached as a subject of study, a tool for research, and a form in its own right. It connects dance to craftsmanship, handiwork to body movement, and everyday life to creation. The artists brought together for this first episode share a common focus on gesture, fabrication, and the performative dimension of acts of making and doing. Their practices share a sensitive approach to manual labor, the transformation and/or arrangement of materials, considered as a performative gesture. For its opening, the exhibition will begin with a period of action and creation. The invited artists will intervene in the space, in the presence of the public. The act of making will thus become the starting point for the exhibition. These shared gestures will open the first movement of the exhibition. The objects, structures, and installations produced on this occasion will then take their place in the Magasins Généraux space, integrated into the works presented during the event and available for the whole duration of the exhibition.
In an assembly of gestures, the performative gesture is both the point of origin and the memory of the object. It prompts reflection on the relationship between the body, matter, and time: how can an action, a transformation, a movement become a work of art? How can something that has been done under the gaze of another continue to have an effect once the gesture has been suspended? Between exhibition and process, the hypothesis of an assembly of gestures (episode 1) restores the value of the gesture as a thought and a connecting link. By articulating choreographic, artisanal, and domestic practices, it questions how doing can become form, and how this trace can in turn generate a new space of experience.
