Blue Roses

Spotted for his charismatic presence in the numerous pieces he danced in, including those by American choreographer Trajal Harrell, Thibault Lac’s solo confirms his burgeoning choreographic talent. Dressed in disparate outfits, the dancer crosses camp references, from hybrid mythologies to glamorous figures. Contrary to his somewhat cheesy title, the aim is not so much to offer the artificial seduction of a show bordering on kitsch, but to subtly shift the spectator’s gaze in front of these unsurprising images. The shift that results from this intriguing work of undermining is similar to that of his performer, moving about with faun hooves on his feet and a fan of green feathers in his hand. Through the variegated universe of the sets, the scenic space alludes sometimes to a flowery garden, sometimes to a strange swamp in which these different archetypes intersect. Between overt sentimentality and grotesque melancholy, the play plays on its fragility as well as its aesthetic bias. Combining humour and sincere emotion, it questions the very idea of representation.

Thibault Lac

Thibault Lac studied architecture, then went on to study at the P.A.R.T.S. school in Brussels, where he worked with Jérôme Bel and Tino Sehgal. He is also a recurring presence in works by Trajal Harrell. In addition, he led collaborative projects such as Such Sweet Thunder with visual artist Tore Wallert and composer Tobias Koch, which won the Impulstanz Festival's Prix Jeunes Chorégraphes in 2019, or in 2022 Knight-Night, co-created at the CN D with Bryana Fritz.
