Hip hop and jazz dances share the same history of resilience, orality, and embodied transmission—yet this deep connection is often erased in narratives. Born in the contexts of racial segregation, styles like the lindy hop or authentic jazz, manifest in 1920’s Harlem, incarnate forms of resistance, collection expression, and freedom. These dances, animated by the energy of a community, are based on codes that we still find today in hip hop dance : improvisation, call & response, a spirit of competition, and individual creativity. Beyond gestural or rhythmic resemblances, hip hop and jazz share forms of knowledge that circulate by mimesis and exchange and are influenced by the evolution of musical styles. This workshop invites participants to physically experience this connection through the concept of the “jazz continuum” by reactivating embodied memory and moving through eras and styles.
