After studying molecular biology, Xavier Le Roy achieved worldwide recognition for his critical and experimental approach to dance, which he has developed since the early 1990s. His solos and collaborative pieces test out the limits of the choreographic field, of the staged body and its actions. By placing the relation- ship between the performer and the audience at the heart of his investigations, he has also devised forms for exhibition spaces, presented at the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona, or the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Experiments between sounds and movements in an orchestral concert « Dispositif » (Aparatus) – Interpretation and reinterpretation

This worshop is conceived from a choreography that Xavier Le Roy had made with the music of Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, whose movements resulted from the study of a conductor’s interpretation as if it were a choreography of its own and in which the gestures seem to both produce and be produced by the music. Based on the orchestral concert situation, this work is motivated by the desire to blur the relationship between causes and effects of movements to ask the following questions: When is one playing and when is one being played by this highly motile music? What is the moment before and after the sound, the movement, the intention to move, the motorics of the play? How much is our pleasure in listening to music rise in live performance conducted by a desire for, and a trouble about, the synchronicity of a well-functioning machine to see / hear?
