The narrative, fragmentary and incomplete at first, which came to be called History – of art, of dance – needs, in order to appear clearly, to leave behind the multiple, impure sources that participated in its elaboration. Dance at the beginning of the 20th century drew on a vast repertoire of forms and expressions: exotic dances from colonial empires, popular scenes and cabaret, all of which were absorbed into the Western theatrical apparatus. What would today’s dream of a different kind of dance look like, one that would allow the full diversity of choreographic expressions to flow in – without hierarchizing them? Думи мої - Dumy Moyi, a piece created in 2013, is a bit like a dream; it embraces its logic, the fulgurance of its images. A dream of a show, halfway between ceremony, number, parade and recital. Wrapped in costumes by designer Romain Brau, François Chaignaud shows a body caught up in multiple futures – just like these nearby gods, fantastic creatures in sparklingly colorful costumes.

François Chaignaud

A 2003 graduate of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, François Chaignaud has collaborated with numerous choreographers, including Alain Buffard, Boris Charmatz, Emmanuelle Huynh and Gilles Jobin. Since 2004, he has pursued a multi-faceted career as a dancer, choreographer, singer, actor, historian and cabaret artist. His work, very early on marked by the articulation of song and dance (Думи мої, 2013), is also nourished by in-depth historical research for his own pieces as well as for the many collaborations he carries out (with Jérôme Marin, Marie Caroline Hominal or Théo Mercier). From 2005 to 2016, he created several shows with Cecilia Bengolea, including Sylphides (2009), (M)IMOSA (with Trajal Harrell and Marlene Monteiro Freitas, 2011) and Dub Love (2013). With Nino Laisné, he creates Romances inciertos, un autre Orlando (2017), then Symphonia Harmoniæ Cælesitum Revelationum (2019) with Marie Pierre Brébant. In 2020, he co-signed GOLD SHOWER with butoh icon Akaji Maro, and created Un boléro with Dominique Brun. His work also extends to group pieces: in 2018, he created Soufflette for the Norwegian ballet Carte Blanche, and in 2022 t u m u l u s, with Geoffroy Jourdain (Les Cris de Paris). In June 2023, he will create Cortèges with composer Sasha J. Blondeau, and in October will premiere the piece Mirlitons with beatboxer Aymeric Hainaux. His work is performed all over the world, and he is currently associate artist at Bonlieu, Scène Nationale d'Annecy, at Chaillot - Théâtre national de la Danse in Paris, as well as at the Maison de la danse and the Biennale de la danse de Lyon.
