Modernités critiques :
une histoire culturelle
de la danse (1945-1980)

At the end of World War II, modern dance movements entered a time of crisis, while ballet monopolized the very idea of modernity in dance. Then came the Cold War and decolonization struggles; as nations competed in a reconfigured world, dance was instrumentalized in the service of cultural diplomacy. From the United States to the Soviet Union, but also in the emerging nations of the South, new and divergent visions of the modernity of dance were taking shape.

Counter-culture movements, which began in North America with the Beat Generation, spread and revolutionized the field of dance. By the end of the 1970’s, when Annie Suquet’s story comes to a close, these hopes had been squashed. This book follows on from Suquet’sprevious book, L'Éveil des modernités (1870-1945).

Annie Suquet’s April 6 & 13 conferences echo the publication of her book.
