Musée de la danse France / Rennes
Boris Charmatz

Born from a crossover between the museum, a site for conservation and exhibition, dance, the art of movement, and the choreography centre of Rennes, with a site for both productions and residencies, the Musée de la Danse is a laboratory-institution whose framework can be transformed according to the objects, ideas or bodies that it hosts. Since 2009, the various events in this ongoing adventure, directed by the dancer and choreographer Boris Charmatz, form a play of combinations, exploring the possibilities of crosses between an exhibition, performative gestures and the articulation of a discourse. During such experimental and nomadic exhibitions as expo zéro, brouillon, 20 dancers pour le XXe siècle, and participatory events including Fous de danse or A dancer’s day, the Musée de la Danse invents an original bond between the living and the reflexive, between art and archive, or between creation and transmission. Presented in such museums as the MoMA or the Tate Modern, but also in schools, libraries, public squares and theatres, it is a museum that displays its own museum, grafting itself onto the urban space, and contaminating other institutions. If, as Boris Charmatz states “the dancer’s body is the only true Museum of Dance”, it is a body which can be, turn by turn, an archive, a movement, or a discourse, capable of occupying space and saturating it with words and gestures. And its physical and imaginary territory, offbeat propositions and fantastical collections turn topsy-turvy the relationships that have been established between the public, art and its practice, while pushing back the frontiers of this phenomenon called dance, by taking it as the starting point for our view of the world.
