Focusing on the music of Francis Johnson, a little-known African-American composer who composed more than three hundred cotillions, marches, and waltzes, this project aims to create a series of audiovisual documents on French-inspired American pieces from the early nineteenth century, reconstructed with the New York Baroque Dance Company.

This practice-based research project aims to enrich the “Compose & Dance” web app, dedicated to sharing the creative process of dance, with three new scenarios. Developed in connection with choreographic works and approaches or traditional dances, they invite participatory interpretation. One of these pieces brings together artists and residents in a public space.

This research focuses on variety shows, a parodic form structured in tableaux which appeared in the 18th century, and gained popularity in the 19th century and under the Troisième République in cafés-concerts and music-halls; the goal is to constitute a detailed database on existing variety shows in France from 1869 to 1939.
