Tom Johnson – born in Colorado in 1939 – studied at the University of Yale and attended classes by Morton Feldman. He began his career in the United States and continued it in France from 1983, where he became one of the main representatives of the minimalist trend. Often musical demonstrations of mathematical phenomena, Tom Johnson’s compositions are frequently based on formula, predictable permutations and sequences starting out from limited material. The composer’s work reveals his interest in logical processes such as counting, often deployed humorously. His free, contrasting and apparently simple language is expressed through operas, works for various groups and radio works. These include Duos à compter (1982), Histoires à dormir debout (1985), Riemannoper (1988), an opera based on four notes, Les Vaches de Narayana (1989), Bonhoeffer Oratorium (1982–1988), Organ and silence (1999), Kientzy Loops (2000), 844 Chords (2005), Septet (2009). At the CN D, ‘Tom Johnson plays Tom Johnson’ in his artist’s talk.
