When they improvise, performers work on several levels of perception. They listen, watch, feel, act and react according to their perceptions and those of their partners in a given space-time. The art of composition in real times resides in their capacities to remain open to the riches of inner and outer impulsions but, also, to receive, treat and propose matter in an uninterrupted flow. Choreographer, singer and dancer of many face, Mark Tompkins manipulates genres and mixes forms with a tireless desire for breaking down barriers. With the I.D.A. company, founded in 1983, he produces performative sui generis pieces mingling music, song, text and video.
